Prix Pictet, the prestigious photography award, launched today at the world’s foremost photography festival Les Rencontres d’Arles. The announcement for this year’s theme, Growth, will be held tonight in Arles at the Théâtre Antique. Since its launch in 2008 by the Geneva-based private bank Pictet & Cie, the Prix Pictet has become the world’s leading prize in photography and sustainability. Its purpose is to use the power of photography to communicate to a global audience.

The theme for the third cycle is Growth. At once a blessing and a curse, Growth, in all its forms, presents one of the great conundrums facing humanity in the early decades of the twenty-first century.

Winners of the award receive 72,000Euro and a place on next year’s jury committee. The new work of 2008’s award recipient, Benoit Aquin seen above, will be on display at the festival.
